We celebrated Grandparents day on Tuesday 31st of January. As it was also St. Bridget’s eve we took the opportunity to spend some time making St. Bridget’s crosses together before enjoying some tea and cakes. Fr Pat was on hand to bless all our crosses for us. The children spent time writing poems about their grandparents and drawing their portraits which were all displayed in the school.

As part of our work on our Green Flag for Biodiversity we visited Glenveagh National Park. We enjoyed nature walks and workshops which helped us identify and learn about different species of trees, plants and insects.  See our gallery for lots more photographs.

On a wet and windy day in November Jim brought the Bumbleance to our school so that the children could see what it looked like inside and learn all about the service that he and his colleagues provide to sick children and their families all over Ireland. We were especially happy to hear that Donegal will have it’s own Bumbleance in 2017. Bumbleance is a service provided by The Saoirse Foundation, a national children’s charity which was set up by Tony and Mary Heffernan in 2010. The service relies on donations to keep it running and we hope to hold a fundraiser for Bumbleance in the coming months. Well done to everyone who kept up with their reading over the summer holidays. Participants of the Summer Stars Reading Programme in conjunction with Leabharlann Phobal na Rossann received their certificates to mark their efforts. Maith sibh!

We were very lucky to welcome Leah, Evan, James, Eli, Cormac and John Anthony to our school in August. We hope they enjoy their time here in Scoil Mhuire.

On Tuesday 13th of September we celebrated ‘Roald Dahl Day’ on what would have been the author’s 100th birthday. To mark the occasion we all dressed up as our favourite Roald Dahl characters and held a birthday party in his honour. There were lots of different activities from reading excerpts from his numerous books, to colouring pictures, solving crossword puzzles and much more. We had a small prizegiving for the best costumes. To round off the day we gave every student an envelope and four lucky winners found golden tickets inside which they could trade for a much coveted homework pass! We had a ‘Gloriumptious’ time and everyone enjoyed letting their imagination run wild for the day.

We would like to wish Holly, Orla, Lexie, Aoibhe, Katie, Jamie, Owen G, Owen D and Seamus all the very best as they move on to secondary school. Hope you come back to visit us now and again.

Monday the 20th of June was a very busy day at Scoil Mhuire. It was a day of celebration as we raised our Green Flag for Travel and had the official opening of our new bicycle shelter. The honour of raising our newest Green Flag went to the students in 6th class as they had been involved in achieving each of our 4 Green Flags during their time in the school. We invited Jimmy Mc Veigh from An Taisce to open our new bike shelter, as he was instrumental in getting the shelter for us and also helped us enormously with our work on the Travel theme. Jimmy was ably assisted by the 4 students in Naoínain Bheaga. It was also the day that we had our school mass to mark the end of another successful year at Scoil Mhuire, after the mass Fr. Pat blessed the new climbing frame which was installed thanks to The Darren Mills Memorial Committee and our Parents Association. As always it was a lovely occasion and we were delighted to welcome many family and community members to help us celebrate.

What a fantastic day we had with Aengus, our heritage expert, at Mullaghdearg Beach back in June. We spent the day learning about the Flora and Fauna of the sandunes, rockpools and the beach itself. We even discovered a rare species of butterfly – the Small Blue.
