Scoil Mhuire, Belcruit is a two teacher rural school situated in the townland of Belcruit in the Parish of Kincasslagh, Co. Donegal. The school was originally named Belcruit National School but the name was changed to Scoil Mhuire, Belcruit in 2000.
The present school building was opened in 1964 as a two teacher school. During the early 1980’s the school became a three teacher school and an additional classroom was built in 1990. Having dropped to a two teacher for a period the school gained its third teacher again in September 2004 until it again dropped to a two teacher school in 2011.
We are proud to say that the world famous country music singer Daniel O’ Donnell is a past pupil of our school.
We are very active in protecting the environment and have gained two Green flags to date, our first was erected by Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh (Altan) in 2010 for waste management and our second was risen by our own Daniel O’Donnell for Preservation of Energy in the Summer of 2012. We are currently working towards our third flag which is based on the theme of preservation of water.
Our school starred on the RTE television production of ‘Test the Teachers’ in December 2010. This involved our two teachers Ms. Comack and Ms. Houston. Although, the real stars of the show were the children from 5th class – Declan Ward, Declan Mc Lean, JJ mc Cann, Oisín Mc Dowell, Ellen Sharkey, Ellen Ashun and Courtney parker. The tv cameras came to the school for filming and this followed through with a very enjoyable trip to the RTE studios in Dublin for the children in the senior classroom.
We have a keen interest in sporting activities, which include Gaelic football, Rounders, Athletics, Basketball and Rugby. We are very proud of the creative talents of the children in the school and we have showcased this by putting on musical productions, such as ‘Cinderella and Rockerfella’, ‘Alice the musical’ and ‘Panto Pandemonium’ in recent years.
